This 18″ x 18″ mixed media painting and collage on paper is a humorous and pointed response to the spiritual performance culture found in Paonia, Colorado. Here in the North Fork Valley, plastic shamans seem to grow as abundantly as the region’s famous cherries, apricots, apples, pears and peaches. The term “plastic shaman” refers to individuals who claim spiritual authority or indigenous lineage without any real connection to the traditions they imitate. These self-proclaimed spiritual leaders often use exaggerated or appropriated language to appear authentic.
One day, a note blew into my yard that captured this perfectly. Instead of simply saying “Please knock,” it read: “Do NOT enter unless you were invited by speaking with the sacred space-keeper and obtaining permission in this moment.” The overly ceremonial tone made me laugh, and I knew I had to incorporate it into a painting.
The resulting artwork is both satirical and symbolic. It is currently framed in black with no matting, though I’ve included sample images showing how it looks in different frames with a white mat. There’s also a photo of it unframed next to my foot for size reference. If you prefer to purchase it unframed, I’d be happy to make arrangements.
