Horsey McKnees

$900.00

Whimsical drawing of a horse with a good dose of humor. Its title is Horsey McKnees.

I’m planning to create a whole series of farm animals in this style, and hopefully offer custom pet portraits soon too!

This one’s a portrait of a little old warhorse with a round body and one eye set way higher than the other. There’s even an arrow pointing to the high eye, in case you miss it (wink). I like to think he put that eye up there so he could see further.

Painting details:

This painting is part of a new series I’ve started exploring—a looser, more whimsical style that feels playful and full of personality. It’s a big shift from the more formal pet portraits I’ve done in the past, and honestly, I’m loving the freedom this new direction brings. There’s something really satisfying about letting go of perfection and just letting the brush (and the animal) do what it wants.

This particular piece is a portrait of a little old warhorse—round-bodied, a bit beat up, and completely endearing. One of his eyes is set way higher than the other, which made me laugh while I was painting it. There’s even an arrow pointing to the high eye, just in case you need help spotting it. I like to imagine he positioned it up there on purpose so he could peek over the fence. It’s silly, but it makes me smile every time I look at him.

The surface I painted on is a 24 x 24-inch cradled gesso board that’s 2 inches deep, which gives the piece a modern, gallery-style presence on the wall. The gesso has a gritty texture that I absolutely love—it adds a subtle roughness to the otherwise smooth finish, giving the surface an extra layer of interest and personality. I painted the piece using acrylics and sealed it with a milky-smooth protective clear coat to give it a soft sheen and keep it safe for years to come.

If you’re into quirky animals with a lot of heart and a little attitude, this one’s for you. He’s goofy, tough, and totally huggable in his own weird way. I hope he makes you smile too.

Interested in a custom piece like this? I’ll be offering pet portraits in this looser, more playful style soon! You can learn more or reserve a spot at robinarthurart.com/custom.
