Symbolic Inclusion

$425.00

I created this reclaimed wood wall artwork using rustic materials and a pointed social message.

Titled “Symbolic Inclusion,” the piece features hand-cut lettering collaged onto a weathered plank of reclaimed wood. I hand painted the words with bronze paint and sparkling micaceous iron oxide, giving them a slight metallic sheen that contrasts with the distressed green and brown patina of the wood.

Near the bottom I included a handwritten note that reads: “The artist represents a ‘diverse’ or bohemian element in a homogeneous, affluent group, often used to create a facade of cultural awareness or inclusivity.”

This piece is the first in a series I am developing that looks at the social dynamic where wealthy or elite circles bring an artist into their group. In that setting the artist can become symbolic—signaling cultural capital, edginess or authenticity while helping project sophistication or openness.

The reclaimed wood shows its age through worn paint, exposed grain and natural texture, which adds to the character of the work.
